This St. Patrick’s Day, Spread the Word: The Luck o’ the Irish Won’t Save You from Impaired Driving
Broadview, IL — St. Patrick’s Day is just around the corner, bringing parades, parties, green beer, and celebrations to communities across Illinois. To remind motorists of the dangers of impaired driving and to help keep our roads safe, the Broadview Police Department is partnering with the Illinois State Police and the Illinois Department of Transportation for a stepped-up traffic safety campaign running from March 13 through 6 a.m. March 23.
“With St. Patrick’s Day falling on a Tuesday this year, we anticipate celebrations throughout the entire week, as well as the weekends before and after,” said Commander Cupello. “We urge everyone to celebrate responsibly. Plan for a sober ride home before you leave the house — your safety and the safety of others depend on it.”
During the enforcement period, the Broadview Police Department will be watching for drivers impaired by alcohol, cannabis, or other drugs, including prescription medications that can affect driving ability. Speeding, distracted driving, and all traffic violations will be strictly enforced.
Whether you’re attending a party, hosting friends, or heading out to a bar, make safety your top priority. When it’s time to leave, ensure your designated driver is sober. Remember, walking or biking while impaired by alcohol, cannabis, or other substances can also be dangerous. Choose a sober friend to accompany you. Designated drivers should remain alert for impaired pedestrians who may not follow traffic signals or street signs. It’s not about luck — it’s about making smart decisions.
Additional safety reminders:
- Impaired is impaired. Whether drunk, high, or affected by other substances, it is never okay to drive. Plan for a sober driver, public transportation, or a ride service.
- If you see an impaired driver on the road, call 911 and report it.
- If a friend is about to drive impaired, take the keys and help them find a safe ride home.
- Always buckle up — every trip, every time.
The St. Patrick’s Day “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Drive High. Get a DUI.” enforcement campaign is funded by federal traffic safety funds from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and administered by IDOT.
